Each major subcontractor.
- Company employees / Subcontractors
Will act safely and responsibly using personal protective equipment and safety
Devices provided. Will bring to management’s attention any defects likely to
affect safe working procedures.
SECTION 3 – MAINTENANCE OF SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS
- EXCAVATION
Before excavating, a permit to excavate will be obtained through client’s representative (where applicable, as well as NOC from the respective authority).
The principal conditions of a permit to excavate require that:
- All existing buried services in the area will be identified and exposed by hand digging, before permission will be sought to machine dig.
- No machine digging will be done within 3 meters of buried services
- Adequately supported by timber, sheet steel piles or other suitable material
OR
- Battened back to a safe angle to prevent collapse.
- Fitted with substantial edge protection to prevent persons falling into the excavation.
- Provided with sufficient ladders to ensure that person can evacuate the excavation without delay in the event of an emergency.
- Where there is a possibility of vehicle driving in to the excavation, will be provided with concrete blocks to act as stops.
