SECTION 3 – MAINTENANCE OF SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS
- WORKING AT HEIGHT – PREVENTION OF FALLS
Where persons are included to work at height where they may fall two meters or more they will be provided with a ‘safe place of work’. This will consists of a working plat form which will conform with the requirements of a working plat form – scaffolding.
Where the above requirements are not reasonably practicable, the following alternatives will be considered:
- Work from a basket or power operated platform
- Use of harness or safety belt attached to a secure anchorage
- LADDERS
No ladder may be used unless it is of sound construction and of the correct length. Defective ladders must be reported immediately to the site supervisor.
Ladders must be erected at the correct angle, e.g.1200mm up to300mm out.
Ladders should rise at least one meter above their landing places or the highest rungs used unless there are adequate hand holds.
- SAFE MANUAL HANDLING OF MATERIALS
If any heavy object is to be lifted and carried to another point, first inspect and clear the area and route over which the object is to be carried. Be sure that there is nothing in the way that might cause slipping or tripping.
Inspect the object to be lifted to determine how it should be grasped. Make sure it is free of shape edges, protruding nail points, silvers or other hazards that might cause injury to the hand or body.
Where there is adequate clear access it is preferable to use the jack trolley for lifting of heavy objects.
- LIFTING EQUIPMENT
Mobiles cranes/Hoist- before any lifting appliances into service the site representative
will ensure that there is a current test certificate in respect of such equipment. Copies of certificates must be available for examination. Drivers must hold a current operators certificate.
